St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, a historical southern landmark, was organized in 1841 and built on Statehouse Square in Milledgeville, the Old Capitol of Georgia. During the Civil War, General Sherman's Union troops reportedly used the church to stable their horses, burned the pews for firewood, and poured molasses down the pipes of the organ.
