The
southern plantation...a sanctuary from the outside world, a
land of cotton and gracious living. Gathering at the river,
friends and neighbors wait in anticipation for the arrival of
the steamboat, an event of some importance in those days. Although
self-sufficient in many ways, planters depended on a variety
of these river boats for the transportation of cotton, livestock,
goods and passengers to and from these vast estates.

"I love our
Georgia rivers; especially the Oconee, the Ocmulgee and the
Altamaha. Native American names like Chattahoochee,
Ogeechee, and Suwannee; they fit precisely into the mood
of many of the scenes I enjoy painting of our South.
Perhaps my Cherokee lineage evokes these emotions..."
